چکیده

The distributed (∆ + 1)-coloring problem is one of most fundamental and well-studied problems in Distributed Algorithms. Starting with the work of Cole and Vishkin in 86, there was a long line of gradually improving algorithms published. The current state-of-the-art running time is O(∆ log ∆+log∗ n), due to Kuhn and Wattenhofer, PODC’06. Linial (FOCS’87) has proved a lower bound of 1 2 log∗ n for the problem, and Szegedy and Vishwanathan (STOC’93) provided a heuristic argument that shows that algorithms from a wide family of locally iterative algorithms are unlikely to achieve running time smaller than Θ(∆ log ∆). We present a deterministic (∆+1)-coloring distributed algorithm with running time O(∆)+ 1 2 log∗ n. We also present a tradeoff between the running time and the number of colors, and devise an O(∆ · t)-coloring algorithm with running time O(∆/t+log∗ n), for any parameter t, 1 < t ≤ ∆1−2, for an arbitrarily small constant 2, 0 < 2 < 1. Our algorithm breaks the heuristic barrier of Szegedy and Vishwanathan, and achieves running time which is linear in the maximum degree ∆. On the other hand, the conjecture of Szegedy and Vishwanathan may still be true, as our algorithm is not from the family of locally iterative algorithms. On the way to this result we study a generalization of the notion of graph coloring, which is called defective coloring. In an m-defective p-coloring the vertices are colored with p colors so that each vertex has up to m neighbors with the same color. We show that an m-defective p-coloring with reasonably small m and p can be computed very efficiently. We also develop a technique to employ multiple defective colorings of various subgraphs of the original graph G for computing a (∆ + 1)-coloring of G. We believe that these techniques are of independent interest. ∗This research has been supported by the Israeli Academy of Science, grant 483/06. -λ coloring of graphs and Conjecture Δ ^ 2

For a given graph G, the square of G, denoted by G2, is a graph with the vertex set V(G) such that two vertices are adjacent if and only if the distance of these vertices in G is at most two. A graph G is called squared if there exists some graph H such that G= H2. A function f:V(G) {0,1,2…, k} is called a coloring of G if for every pair of vertices x,yV(G) with d(x,y)=1 we have |f(x)-f(y)|2 an...

A Self-Stabilizing (Δ+4)-Edge-Coloring Algorithm for Planar Graphs in Anonymous Uniform Systems

This paper proposes a self-stabilizing edge coloring algorithm using (Δ + 4) colors for distributed systems of a planar graph topology, where Δ ≥ 5 is the maximum degree of the graph. The algorithm can be applied to anonymous uniform systems and its time complexity is O(n 2) moves under the central daemon model.

On the Complexity of Distributed Greedy Coloring

Distributed Greedy Coloring is an interesting and intuitive variation of the standard Coloring problem. It still consists in coloring in a distributed setting each node of a given graph in such a way that two adjacent nodes do not get the same color, but it adds a further constraint. Given an order among the colors, a coloring is said to be greedy if there does not exist a node for which its as...

Almost multiplicative linear functionals and approximate spectrum

We define a new type of spectrum, called δ-approximate spectrum, of an element a in a complex unital Banach algebra A and show that the δ-approximate spectrum σ_δ (a) of a is compact. The relation between the δ-approximate spectrum and the usual spectrum is investigated. Also an analogue of the classical Gleason-Kahane-Zelazko theorem is established: For each ε>0, there is δ>0 such that if ϕ is...

Algorithms and Almost Tight Results for 3-Colorability of Small Diameter Graphs

The 3-coloring problem is well known to be NP-complete. It is also well known that it remains NP-complete when the input is restricted to graphs with diameter 4. Moreover, assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), 3-coloring can not be solved in time 2 on graphs with n vertices and diameter at most 4. In spite of the extensive studies of the 3-coloring problem with respect to several basi...

Simple Distributed Δ + 1 Coloring in the SINR Model

In wireless ad hoc networks, distributed node coloring is a fundamental problem closely related to establishing efficient communication through TDMA schedules. For networks with maximum degree ∆, a ∆+ 1 coloring is the ultimate goal in the distributed setting as this is always possible. In this work we propose a very simple 4∆ coloring along with a color reduction technique to achieve ∆+ 1 colo...
